Global Warming: Where’s the Heat?

I read a new article recently entitled, The Mystery of Global Warming’s Missing Heat. The basis of the article is that scientists have been expecting to see a rise in the oceans average temperature but that rise hasn’t happened. Here is the first paragraph of the article:

Some 3,000 scientific robots that are plying the ocean have sent home a puzzling message. These diving instruments suggest that the oceans have not warmed up at all over the past four or five years. That could mean global warming has taken a breather. Or it could mean scientists aren’t quite understanding what their robots are telling them.

Notice that it is never once suggested that perhaps global warming isn’t actually happening. These scientists are testing water temperatures to confirm the existence of global warming, and when the data doesn’t match the hypothesis no one stops to think that perhaps that is evidence that the hypothesis is wrong.  I find that interesting.

In truth I believe that global warming is happening.  But, I don’t believe that SUV’s are the cause.  And I don’t believe that hybrid SUV’s are the answer.  That the planet goes through warming and cooling phases has long been known.  Is the recent spate of warm weather due to the excessive hairspray of the 80’s?  Or, is it natural warming?  Or is it merely an insignificant blip on the climatological radar?  Who knows?  Clearly not these scientists?

And that is the point.  Those who profess to know; those who would use global warming for political ends don’t really know either.

  1. Please see here for what is happenning to Northern and Southern Hemisphere sea ice.

  2. Smart work on global warming issue……….. I really appreciate your efforts…. amazing………………… and I will try to read you blog frequently………

  3. I have been wondering where global warming is myself.

Here in Michigan we have had probably the coldest winter on record in 5 years or so. We have had almost double our normal snow amount, and there were spans where we never broke above single digits and the lowest temprature we hit, without windchill was 10 below 0.

If global warming exists, I would really love a warm up here.

  4. heh… eath day celebrations in canada had to be canceled cos of extreme snow… hmmm

  5. I’ve got to say that global warming is not predicted to universally heat both land and sea. When the glaciers melt, cold, ice water actually lowers ocean temperatures. Warm water currents such as the North Atlantic current cools and sinks which, in turn, makes certain areas of North America that are normally warmed by this current cooler (even though it is global WARMING). There are cascade effects and interdependencies in the global ecosystem that we haven’t begun to understand yet. We should expect erratic whether such as heat waves AND extreme snow instead of a universal warming of all land and sea.
